There is still time to catch this year’s Blackpool Illuminations display which is shining until November 10.
As announced earlier this year, instead of turning off on November 3 as was originally scheduled, the annual lights spectacular has now been extended for an extra week.
Merlin, who operate The Blackpool Tower, Madame Tussauds, the Sealife Centre and Golden Isle Adventure Golf in Blackpool, is funding the bonus week to extend Blackpool’s season even further for the benefit of the local economy.
Cllr Graham Cain, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for tourism and leisure, said: “We are gearing up for one of the busiest weeks of the year as children enjoy their half-term holidays.
“Traditionally this means the end of Blackpool’s season but this year it is being extended for another week.
“The Illuminations were shown on Coronation Street last week and we want everyone to know that there is still chance to see them.
“As well as all the usual sights and sounds of Blackpool Illuminations, this year we also have an interactive app for smart phones and tablets.
“By scanning the QR codes which line the Illuminations route with the app, people can bring the Illuminations to life with a range of exciting characters who will give users a guided tour of the route.
“It really brings something extra to the Blackpool Illuminations experience.”
And Iain Hawkins, Head of Blackpool cluster at Merlin Entertainments, added: “‘The Blackpool Illuminations have always prolonged the resort’s summer season by attracting the crowds right through the autumn months.
“We wanted to get the upmost out of this special time of year by extending the period by another week, thus shortening the time between the Illuminations and the Christmas lights switch on.
“We hope this will have a positive effect on other traders as well as great value for visitors.
“It’s a small price to pay for the great benefits we’ll see in the resort.”
