‘Kendal’ is one of the leading festivals of its kind in the world. It is an internationally known event, attracting film premieres from around the globe.
Film makers, TV producers, adventurers, climbers and world-class lecturers gather to take part in four packed days of the very best films, speakers, books and exhibitions covering all aspects of mountain and adventure sports culture.
At the heart of Kendal’s programme is the mountain film competition, attracting film premières from around the world. Over 50 films are screened (from 200+ entries) with ten coveted prizes up for grabs. KMF is not all extreme action – films genres include culture, drama, wildlife and environmental documentaries plus a huge lecture programme. Other highlights include arts and literature events, plus the highly respected ‘Adventure Film Academy’ for aspiring film-makers – involving the BBC and other key organisations.
Together with the Art and Photography events, numerous competitions, specialist sports nights (Bike, Snowsports, Free-Flight and Endurance Sports) the Boardman Tasker literary award, KMF for Schools programme plus the Adventure Film Academy for aspiring filmmakers, make it the ‘must do’ mountain festival.
Extra expenditure into the local economy generated by the Kendal Mountain Festival has been independently calculated to be in excess of £1.5m.
The Festival has even been cited by the Sunday Times as one of the reasons young people are attracted to Kendal as a place to live!
Our vision is to inspire more people to explore, enjoy and represent mountains, wilderness and their cultures.
