Penrith Winter Droving Event, 15 Nov

A call has gone out for businesses and entertainers to help turn a winter festival into a sparkling success.

A fire and lantern procession will top off a day of street theatre, music, food, crafts and a market for the annual Winter Droving event in Penrith which takes place this year on November 15.

Now organisers Eden Arts are urging people to come forward to play their part in the festival which is expected to attract more than 10,000 visitors.

They are also looking for teams to compete in the Drover’s Cup tournament of races and games along the streets of Penrith.

This year the organisation has teamed up with Taste Cumbria, who will host a food village featuring the county’s finest produce.

A spokeswoman for Eden Arts said: “The Drover’s Cup tournament invites teams to compete in races and games to win the cup.

“Games include tug-of-war, hay bale racing and sausage eating competitions as spectators line the streets to cheer the teams on.

“The current cup holders are the Penrith Fire Service who stormed ahead in last year’s contest.

“There are still a couple of spaces for teams at the 2014 event to enter. They must be mixed gender and consist of six to eight people.

“Be warned, the Fire Service will be defending their cup!”

Local producers still have time to enter the food and craft event with a deadline for applications of October 17.

Also this year will be game stalls hosted by community groups, charities and businesses.

These will be based in Great Dockray and are expected to include traditional games such as coconut shys, bat the rat, apple bobbing and the village stocks.

Organisations and groups have until November 1 to register.
