Tom Daley Diving Academy is Launched

Last weekend Manchester Aquatics Centre (MAC) played host to the ASA National Skills Final. The event also saw the launch of the Tom Daley Diving Academy, the Learn to Dive programme by GLL, who operate the MAC under the Better brand on behalf of Manchester City Council.

Using the 1m and 3m diving boards, competitors from ages eight to 16 competed in the annual competition, which featured the best young English age group divers.

Diving is one of the most exciting sports to take part in, involving leaping and springing into water while trying to perfect a series of perfect body positions. Competitors will complete a series of dives and skills in a circuit format using the 1m and 3m boards and poolside. The winner is the diver with the highest combined points.

Councillor Rosa Battle, Manchester City Council executive member for culture and leisure said:

“We’re delighted that Manchester has been selected to host such a prestigious National event. It is always a pleasure to see young talented athletes showcase their skills and ability and we hope that they enjoy the facilities and the welcome that the MAC has to offer.”

Jo Calvino, Aquatics Development Manager, Diving & Multi Disciplines for GLL said:

“We’re delighted to be to be introducing the Tom Daley Diving Academy here at the MAC. The Academy is endorsed and supported by Olympic diver Tom Daley and is designed for both children and adults. The Learn to Dive development programme will provide a framework to develop skills and techniques and to grow the sport at the fundamental stage, creating access and helping those with talent into competitive pathways.”

Tom Daley said:

“It’s great that people of all ages in Manchester will get the opportunity to learn how to dive and experience how fun and exciting diving can be.”

The Tom Daley Diving Academy will begin at Manchester Aquatics Centre in September with courses for Juniors and Adults. Further information including an expression of interest form can be found at www.better.org.uk/manchesteraquaticscentre
