Responsible retailing course for bar workers

Licensees, bar staff and shop workers are being urged to take the opportunity to gain a CV-boosting qualification in responsible alcohol retailing.

Blackpool Council’s Public Protection team, in association with the British Institute of Innkeeping Awarding Body (BIIAB) and leading brewer, SAB Miller, are offering the training in the Level One Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing.

The courses, with the first 40 places free to independent retailers, take place at Progress House, on Clifton Road, Blackpool and half-day sessions are being run on January 17 and 20.

Blackpool has been chosen as a venue for the courses as the team are rated as “outstanding” by the BIIAB, as well as having the Premium Centre Charter Certificate from the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.

Cllr Gillian Campbell, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for housing and public protection, said: “In Blackpool we pride ourselves on leading innovation and training within this sector and recognise the importance of responsible retailing which is vital to protecting the public.

“I would urge licensees, managers and bar staff to register to attend now.”

James Whitaker, who works at The New President Hotel on the Promenade, was one of the many people who have found the courses useful before, after completing it in October

“The course was really good and the instructor was great and told us lots of information about responsible retailing.

“I’ve learnt exactly what I needed to know from the course and would recommend it to anybody else who is interested.”

Applicants will learn about:

  • the nature of alcohol and its effect on the human body
  • the Licensing Act 2003
  • protecting children from harm
  • the social responsibilities that come with the sale of alcohol
  • eliminating crime and conflict
  • the importance of personal safety
