Nominations open: Lancashire Celebrate Youth Award

LANCASHIRE residents are paying tribute to young people by nominating them for the Celebrate Youth award. And the good news is that, if you haven’t sent in your nomination yet, there are still six weeks to go before the closing date.

At the Celebrate Youth awards ceremony, young people’s achievements in areas such as volunteering, community engagement and sport will be recognised. The ceremony is being organised by Lancashire County Council’s Young People’s Service. It will take place at 6.30pm on Tuesday, February 18 at Park Hall, Charnock Richard.

Young people between the age of 13 and 19 can be nominated as individuals or groups in the following six award categories:

  • Community Engagement
  • Beyond! Barriers
  • Inspiring Volunteering or Advocacy
  • Sporting Achievement
  • Artistic Achievement
  • *Improving Lives

County Councillor Matthew Tomlinson, cabinet member for children, young people and schools, said:

“Since nominations opened in late September, we’ve already received some high quality entries. However, we’re keen to ensure that young people who deserve to be nominated, don’t miss out.

“So whether it’s a sporting or artistic achievement, volunteering or making a contribution to their local communities, we’d like to hear about it.

“Since I was appointed to this post in May of this year, I have already met hundreds of young people in Lancashire who amply demonstrate the positive qualities and characteristics we’re looking for.

“I will be attending Celebrate Youth next February and look forward to meeting Lancashire’s outstanding young people.”

Nominations should be returned by Friday, December 20. They will be assessed and shortlisted by a judging panel of young people. Awards will be presented on the evening by a host of celebrities and VIPs. Each award winner will receive a special prize, and there will also be an overall Pinnacle Award winner on the night.

Last year’s Celebrate Youth Awards were a huge success. Winners came from across the county, from Clitheroe Youth Forum who won the community engagement category for their work to commemorate people who lost their lives in World War II, to Jack Hardwick from South Ribble, a gifted musician who picked up the artistic achievement award for his contribution to community events.

The Pinnacle Award was won by Hyndburn-based Infinite Flow – a group teaching people ‘free running’ – a form of running from point A to point B using skill, imagination and flair.

This year’s final will feature presentations of work young people have been involved in, including some performances demonstrating their talents.
