Manchester Day photo competition winners revealed

This year’s Manchester Day photo competition attracted a fantastic response – but a winner has been found from among the hundreds of dazzling submissions.

Dimitar Mihaylov, who lives at Salford Quays, scooped the top prize with his picture showing the parade in full flow as a colourful group of dancers arrive in Albert Square.

The Manchester Day Photo Competition judges felt Dimitar’s snap perfectly captured the vibrancy, colour and movement of the parade against the backdrop of Manchester’s City centre and the celebrating crowds.

Dimitar will take away the top prize – a new generation Apple iPad Air 2 with 64GB of storage.

Tom Roche, of Dingle Lane, Warrington, took second prize with his entry of the Manchester Day’s time travelling robot – Albot² – on top of her town hall-shaped time machine. The competition judges liked the composition of the photo, showing the scale of the artworks in the parade with a strong Manchester Day background.

Tom now has another reason to party in Manchester’s city centre – she wins a night’s stay including breakfast at Manchester’s exclusive King Street Townhouse.

Third prize goes to Alex Amato, of Upper Chorlton Road, Manchester, whose ghoulish Day of the Dead photograph has bagged a meal for two at Grill on the Alley. The judges were again impressed with the photo’s composition and depth.

One of the biggest outdoor events in the UK, this year’s Manchester Day saw more than 2,000 participants, from more than 80 community groups, take to the streets for a spectacular parade through the city and entertainment in the city squares.

Cllr Pat Karney, Chair of Manchester Day, said: “Manchester Day is my favourite day of the year – it’s wonderful to look through all of the submitted pictures showing the fantastic times had by all.  Thank you to all the entrants who have reminded me that nothing quite matches up to the atmosphere around Manchester Day.

“As always, choosing the winners has been incredibly difficult – the standard of photography has been first class. There was so many Eureka moments throughout the day and I’m already looking forward to next year.”
