New leisure centre opens at Hough End this June

Work on the brand new Hough End Leisure Centre is reaching its final stages with the facility set to open its doors for the very first time on Monday 15 June 2015.

The new leisure centre is located next to Hough End playing fields on Princess Road, south Manchester, and boasts state-of-the-art facilities.

The centre is home to both a 25m six lane swimming pool and a 17m learner pool and includes a health and fitness gym with 90 stations.

It also features two squash courts as well as a sauna and steam room and a multi-purpose space – which will be used as both a dancer studio and community space.

Hough End Leisure Centre is part of a major programme of investment in leisure facility being undertaken by Manchester City Council that when complete will have created three new leisure centres. Hough End is the second of these centres, joining the East Manchester Leisure Centre which opened late last year and the new Arcadia Centre in Levenshulme – where work is well underway.

The Hough End Leisure Centre will be operated by Greenwich Leisure Limited.

Councillor Rosa Battle, Manchester City Council executive member for culture and leisure said: ”The city council has a commitment to providing top quality leisure facilities so residents have everything they need to live healthier and happier lives.

“Leisure centres are at the heart of local communities and our investment in Hough End, along with other new facilities in the city, ensures local residents have access to modern equipment and high-quality pools in their own neighbourhoods.”

Andy King, Regional Director (North) for GLL, said, “Our mission as a non-profit, charitable social enterprise is to get more people, more active, more often. As such, we want to ensure our leisure facilities provide a number of top class sports and health activities that are accessible and affordable to all of the community.

“We are very excited about this new centre and are proud to have the opportunity to manage such an outstanding facility. We’re confident that it’s going to be one of the best in the city and are looking forward to welcoming local residents through the doors.”

Hough End Leisure Centre will open on Monday 15 June at midday. The public opening will be preceded by a short opening ceremony.
